§ 2-371. Police chief.

  • The chief of police shall be elected biennially by the city council at the second meeting in October of even-numbered years upon the recommendation of the mayor, and serve beginning November 1 thereafter. His compensation shall be fixed by the council before his election. He shall have supervision over the police officers of the city and the support personnel employed at the police department, and they shall act under his instructions and guidance. His duties shall be prescribed by the ordinances of the city, but in cases of emergency he shall perform all duties and obey all rules given by the mayor. He, or an officer of the police department designated by him, shall serve all processes issued by or on behalf of the city, as well as all notices, proclamations, resolutions and ordinances of the mayor or city council.
