§ 22-121. Definitions; classes of contractors.

  • (a)

    Terms defined in state law. Terms used in this article which are defined in F.S. §§ 489.105 and 489.505, as amended, and which are not defined in this article, shall have the definitions assigned to them in such sections.

    (b)

    Classifications. Electrical contractors shall be classified as provided in F.S. § 489.505(8) and (14), as amended. All other contractors shall be classified as provided in F.S. § 489.105, as amended.

    (c)

    Definitions. As used in this article:

    Aluminum specialty structure contractor means a person who primarily does aluminum additions, including but not limited to carports, utility rooms, screen rooms, pool enclosures, vinyl rooms, and soffit and siding. The aluminum contractor shall be permitted to do foundation, slab, masonry and any other work incidental to the construction being performed.

    Building department means the city building, zoning and licensing department.

    Carpenter/general home repair contractor means any person who primarily does nonstructural repairs and maintenance. No work can be done by this category of contractor in the electrical, plumbing and HARV fields or any other category that requires state licensure as defined in F.S. ch. 489.

    Contractor. In addition to the definition assigned to it by state statute, the term "contractor" shall include a gasfitter and a subcontractor.

    Journeyman electrician means any person who possesses the necessary qualifications, training and technical knowledge to install electrical wiring, apparatus or equipment for light, heat or power, under the supervision of a licensed electrical contractor.

    Journeyman plumber means any person who possesses the necessary qualifications, training and technical knowledge to install plumbing, plumbing equipment and incidental apparatus related to the conveyance of water, wastewater, gasses and liquids, under the supervision of a licensed plumbing contractor.

    Licensed contractor means any person who holds a current state certification, state registration, or city certificate of competency as a contractor or journeyman.

    Residential journeyman electrician means any person who possesses the necessary qualifications, training and technical knowledge to install electrical wiring, apparatus or equipment for light, heat or power in residential dwellings under three stories in height with no more than four dwelling units, under the supervision of an electrical contractor.

    Residential journeyman plumber means any person who possesses the necessary qualifications, training and technical knowledge to install plumbing, plumbing equipment and incidental apparatus related to the conveyance of water, wastewater, gasses and liquids in residential dwellings under three stories in height with no more than four dwelling units, under the supervision of a licensed plumbing contractor.

    Subcontractor means any person who is engaged in the business of accepting orders or contracts as a subcontractor in a specific trade, type or unit of work with or for a contractor or owner.

    Unlicensed contractor means any person who does not hold a current state certification, state registration, or city certificate of competency while acting as a contractor or journeyman.
